On Tuesday, I attended an event held by web development giant Wix at their offices in New York City. It focused on Search Engine Optimization (SEO), which is, in simple terms, how well a website ranks on search engines for the keywords it wants to hit. SEO is a complex beast, with many factors that need to be achieved if a site is to rank well, especially given how much competition businesses have online. Experts on the matter are extremely valuable resources.
The website for the event promised that I would “get tons of great tips to boost your site’s ranking, learn all about Wix’s SEO Wiz tool, and find out why SEO is crucial for your business to succeed.” I consider myself somewhat SEO-literate, but I was very pleasantly surprised with how much I learned at this event. The speakers all had unique insights to share, all attacking the topic from different directions.

Karen Sokolow, Founder and Creative Director of Awaken Studio, was the host and first speaker at the event. She is a designer and SEO expert who has launched over 50 websites for clients. She specializes in website design focused on user engagement and converting views into sales.
Next was Art Malkov, an entrepreneur and digital marketing author and expert, who is the Digital Strategy Director at Need Growth, a NYC-based digital agency that focuses on bringing together UX design, SEO, lead acquisition, social media management, and content for integrated digital marketing. He gave crucial insight into how to view a company’s SEO, as well as a variety of valuable advice and strategies that can boost ranking and sales for any type of online business.
Last was Mark Greenfield, Owner and Founder of On Your Mark Sports Massage and Fitness. He spoke firsthand about his journey from having little to no organic search traffic, to being ranked number one on keywords and terms he hadn’t ever thought of. He detailed how digital marketing consulting and SEO strategy has kickstarted his business, giving him an incredible amount of clients that he never thought was possible, tripling his client base.
Karen finished off the event by showcasing Wix’s new SEO Wiz Tool and how business owners can use it to get a head start on the search engine rankings.

The world of SEO is one that’s fast-paced, constantly moving, and businesses need a high level of literacy to make the most out of it. For many, this is the difference between getting lost in the sea of similar businesses and improving impressions, clickthroughs, and sales. All that’s needed is a small marketing budget, and an SEO-specialized digital marketing consultant can be on hand to launch your business to the top.
The 2 hour-long meetup had a good turnout, with a range of professionals and businesses in attendance, all with varying levels of SEO experience and knowledge. I learned plenty myself at the event, and those that I was able to talk to felt the same way.
“It’s probably the best investment you can make for your business. The extra sales that good SEO can get you makes up for the initial investment almost instantly. I spent over $10,000 on services like Yelp to try to improve my sales, but they did nothing for me. Art’s company, Need Growth, was far and away the best investment I made… For me, it tripled my sales in twelve months. New clients are constantly rolling in and I don’t have to worry about finding the sales to keep the lights on.” – Mark Greenfield, OnYourMark.nyc
All in all, the event was a big success. It catered to SEO veterans and novices alike, and had fantastic first-hand stories and advice. I may be, by my own definition, SEO-literate, but the expert speakers at this event showed me that I have a long way to go before I can earn my SEO black belt.
